Swimathon 2012

I’ve decided to set a challenge for myself. It’s been a while since I actively did any kind of training/exercise. Partly because of feeling some anxiety from a recent hernia operation, I was hesitant to exert myself. Not anymore!

I was looking for something to push me into completing a challenge and what better way to do this than doing it to raise money for a charity. When I saw the Swimathon Weekend 2012 I knew I had to sing-up.

So this is me committing to swim 5 Km for the Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Being a true analytics guy, I did the only logical thing I could think of. I began to track my progress to make sure I’ll be able to complete the 5 Km. At this location you can, if you so wish, see my progress until the Swimathon on April 27th. I’ll try and test completing a 5K swim before that date, just to be sure I can do it. If you wan to show your support in any way you can head over to my Swimathon appeal page. There you can either send me a supportive message, or better yet make a donation.

The donation will help the Marie Curie Cancer Care nurses, help take care people with cancer in their own home. Please give as much as you can. Even £5 is enough if it comes from 50 people!

I plan to train until I’m sure I can do the 5K for this challenge. This will require some determination and endurance on my part, having to juggle work, my MSc, and the training, but I’m really excited to do this. I hope you can help support me any way you can.

I appreciate everyone’s support in whatever form it may come.

Customising OSX

Since this OS was very new to me, it took me a while to figure out which applications were useful to me and which customisations added to my productivity. When the iMac is working its HDD to death

After installing a few applications to the iMac, which is an understatement in itself!, I realised that the hard disk was becoming increasingly audible at certain intervals. At the time the machine felt sluggish and it really disrupted the quiet environment I’m used to as of yet. The OS’s Activity Monitor sure enough showed the the high disk activity, but there was no obvious way to determine which was the offending process. After some digging around and some different combinations and a lot of piping I’ve narrowed down to the following command:

alias debug="sudo fs_usage -w -f filesys > ./fs_usage.log; egrep -e read fs_usage.log | less ; egrep -e write fs_usage.log |less; rm -rf fs_usage.log"

If you add this to your shell config file – in my case ~/.zshrc – then the debug command after requesting for the root password will collect some usage data and show sequentially the Reads and Writes that were requested until you broke the debugging( i.e. press C-c).

The last column to the right will contain the name of the process that requested the action. Once you go over the output – keep pressing Space to go to the next page – the most commonly appearing process will most likely be the one increasing the I/O of the HDD. In my case it was the anti-virus being triggered every time I was performing a Spotlight search. Quitting Kasperky’s antivirus from he menu bar seems to have brought back the normal use and quietness.

If the offending process is not easily identified with a web search then close down all critical applications with data you don’t want to lose – you do have a backup policy right? ;) – and start terminating one process at a time:

sudo kill -9 <PID>;

Right now the Sophos antivirus seems to be much better. Any one have prior experience regarding antivirus software for macs?

Κατέθεσα τις προτάσεις που περιλαμβάνω εδώ στο ιστολόγιο στην πλατφόρμα καταχώρησης του labs.opengov.gr.
Θα εκτιμούσα τα σχόλιά σας – είτε θετικά είτε αρνητικά – πάνω στην βιοσιμότητα αυτών των ιδεών.
Αν έχετε ιδέες πάνω στο θέμα, είναι μια καλή ευκαιρία να της καταθέσετε. Τα πλεονεκτήματα που θα προκύψουν αν αξιοποιηθούν υπερμετρούν την αμφιβολία και τον πιθανό σκεπτικισμό ;)

Επιστροφή στην βάση

Μετά από πάνω από ένα μήνα αναχώρησης, επιστρέφω στην τοποθέτηση άρθρων. Έχω κάποια άρθρα που θέλω να τοποθετήσω και θα εκτιμούσα τα όποια σχόλιά σας οδηγούν σε συζήτηση. Βρισκόμουν εκτός Εδινβούργου για αρκετό καιρό σε υποχρεώσεις της δουλειάς μου. Βρισκόμουν σε ένα πλοίο το οποίο έκανε σεισμικές έρευνες στην περιοχή μεταξύ Αυστραλίας και Ινδονησίας.

Η παρουσία μου εκεί ήταν για την εκπαίδευσή μου στο γεωλογικό υλικό αλλά και σε υποστήριξη του λογισμικού πλοήγησης και καταγραφής δεδομένων που υλοποιεί η εταιρία που δουλεύω. Θα έλεγα ότι ήταν εκπληκτική εμπειρία σε πολλαπλά επίπεδα.

Επιστροφή στην έδρα λοιπόν αλλά για λίγο γιατί τα άμεσα σχέδια, μετά και την -απαράδεκτη- ακύρωση της απεργίας της ΒΑ, είναι να επιστρέψω στην Ελλαδα για τις γιορτές.

Ελπίζω να τα πούμε με αρκετούς και από κοντά..

Το βασικό χαρακτηριστικό μιας ηλεκτρονικής συγκυβέρνησης, όπως την σκέφτομαι είναι η αμφίδρομη και μετρήσιμη επικοινωνία του αντιπροσώπου (aka βουλευτή) και των αντιπροσωπευόμενών του. Αυτού του είδους η επικοινωνία είναι δύσκολη λόγω του μεγέθους των μηνυμάτων που θα λαμβάνει ένας αντιπρόσωπος. Και δεν νομίζω ότι υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που πιστεύουν ότι όλα τα ιστολόγια των πολιτικών απαρτίζονται από απαντήσεις των ιδίων σε πολίτες. Πραγματικά δεν θα υπήρχε χρόνος για οτιδήποτε άλλο.

Αυτό που χρειάζεται είναι ένα εργαλείο που να απαριθμεί το μέγεθος ενός ρεύματος ανθρώπων. Να μπορεί να δίνει κλίμακα μεγέθους ης δυναμικής μιας άποψης και της απήχησης που έχει στον κόσμο. Υπάρχει ήδη όμως ένα τέτοιο εργαλείο το οποίο μπορεί αρκετά εύκολα να προσαρμοστεί σε αυτού του είδους την επικοινωνία. Μιλάω για το γνωστό σε αρκετούς/ες από εσάς Twitter. Η συγκεκριμένη πλατφόρμα επικοινωνίας είναι η ιδανική μορφή μιας συγκυβέρνησης σε όλα τα κοινά θέματα. Οποιοδήποτε κυβερνητικό όργανο η κοινοβουλευτικός αντιπρόσωπος θα μπορεί να δημοσκοπεί το σύνολο του λαού ή τους εκλέκτορές του έτσι ώστε να λαμβάνει άμεσο ποσοστό ανταπόκρισης προς συγκεκριμένες προτάσεις. Με την συνδρομή κάποιου αυτόματου αλγόριθμου εμφάνισης ανταπόκρισης ή κάποιες χειροκίνητης εργασίας μέσω οπτικής αναγνώρισης ενδιαφερουσών προτάσεων αλλά και θετικής ψήφισης των καλύτερων από αυτών, θα μπορεί το κάθε κυβερνητικό όργανο να συλλέξει ιδέες και αποδοχή από μεγάλες κοινωνικές ομάδες. Νέο mount από Linux RedHat σε Windows

Διαδικασία για mount απομακρυσμένου διαμοιρασμένου δίσκου Windows (NAS share)

1) Προαπαιτούμενα:
==> Windows username and password για πρόσβαση στο διαμοιρασμένο δίσκο
==> Η διαδρομή του διαμοιρασμένου δίσκου (π.χ. //server/share) ή την IP address
==> root level access στο Linux

2) Κάντε είσοδο χρήστη στο Linux ώς root user (ή με την su command)

3) Δημιουργήστε το σημείο εξάρτησης του δίσκου των Windows τοπικά:

# mkdir -p /mnt/ntserver

4) Χρησιμοποιείστε την παρακάτω εντολή για την εξάρτηση του απομακρυσμένου διαμοιρασμένου δίσκου:

# mount -t cifs //ntserver/download -o username=vivek,password=myPassword /mnt/ntserver

Για παλιά έκδοση του kernel Linux (RHEL <=4 or Debian <= 3) χρησιμοποιείστε την εναλλακτική:

# mount -t smbfs -o username=vivek,password=D1W4x9sw //ntserver/download /mnt/ntserver

5) Πρόσβαση στο Windows 2003/2000/NT share με τις εντολές cd και ls :

# cd /mnt/ntserver; ls -l

Όπου,

  • -t smbfs : Ο τύπος του συστήματος αρχείων που θα εξαρτηθεί (ξεπερασμένο, καλύτερα cifs)
  • -t cifs : Ο τύπος του συστήματος αρχείων που θα εξαρτηθεί
  • -o : επιλογές για την εξάρτηση του δίσκου, η πρώτη είναι το username για να συνδεθούμε στο μοίρασμα των Windows και η δεύτερη είναι το password
  • //ntserver/download : Windows 2000/NT διαμοίρασμα
  • /mnt/ntserver τοπικό σημείο εξάρτησης (to access share after mounting)

Το σοβαρό πρόβλημα με τις διαφημιστικές πινακίδες

Back in Glasgow!!

Well better late than never ;)

I’m back home and in a new flat nonetheless. Yesterday had a brilliant day in the city, so we went out to Kelvingrove Park. We went through the park, past Glasgow uni and ended up in Kelvinhall museum. Unfortunately the museum was too big and we only had half an hour till it closed.

I mus t say though that all Glasgow needs is a bit of sunshine and you can see how incredibly beautifulit is. Take a wee look!!
